Looking Forward To Laser Eye Surgery

Many people are tired of losing or breaking their glasses or spending a lot of time cleaning and moisturizing their contact lenses. They may also not be happy with the available choices in glasses frames and want to enhance their appearance by losing the glasses along with the common nicknames often associated with those that wear corrective lenses. After clearing some hurdles, they may be approved for lasik eye surgery and they can spend the time looking forward to their potentially new appearance in a variety of ways.

First and foremost is for those wearing contacts are to ditch them. They will not be able to wear them for at least a week before the procedure, up to four weeks if they have been wearing rigid contacts for several years. Part of the procedure involves the technician making a map of the surface of the cornea, much like a topographical map showing the hills, valleys and curvature of the eye. The purpose of laser surgery is to reshape the eye into a sphere to allow it to better focus light on the lens.

The cornea provides about two-thirds of the focusing when a person looks at and image and the lens finishes up the remaining third before the image is displayed on the retina and sent to the brain. With the eye out of round, the light is not focused when it passes through the lens, allowing a distorted image to be displayed on the retina. For years corrective lenses have helped focus the image to provide clearer vision but many jobs and sports do not lend themselves to wearing glasses or even contact lenses.

As a new alternative to glasses, laser eye surgery can help restore near-perfect vision, eliminating the need for corrective lenses. As the day draws closer and excitement builds, the patient will want to make sure they have someone available to take them to the doctor and give them a ride back home. Even with laser surgery being conducted on only one eye, it is difficult to drive a vehicle with one eye hidden behind a protective eye patch.

Additionally, during the first few days, there will be some pain and discomfort so the patient will want to make sure they have everything they will need in the house to prevent the need to venture outside. If they are unable to go out ahead of time to stock up for the days following the operation, they will need someone available to take care of their needs. The doctor will need to see the patient about three days after the surgery, so the designated driver will need to be available then as well and possibly to put in the antibiotic eye drops they will need.

During laser eye surgery (whether in NYC or dealing with Miami lasik eye centers)  the patient is usually given a mild sedative and anesthetic eye drops and will go through the operation awake and mobile. However, even with the lack of drugs in their system to put them to sleep, they will not be able to drive themselves and will need to make arrangements prior to the operation.
